American Beach was established by Florida's first black millionaire and president of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company, Abraham Lincoln Lewis. During the Jim Crow laws, African Americans were not allowed to visit most beaches in Jacksonville. This was one of the first beaches African Americans were allowed to visit.
