Queene McCall

Title

Queene McCall

Subject

Daily Life in West Augustine

Description

The Queene McCall Oral History focuses on the life and personal experiences of the titular Queene McCall, a longtime resident of West St. Augustine. The interview, conducted by Charlie Phillips, focuses mainly on Queene’s personal life as a child and young adult in West Augustine. Queene, the youngest of six children, begins the interview by describing the boundaries of old West Augustine. A major theme of the Queene McCall interview is remembrance. Queene recounts life in her childhood home and discusses buildings in West Augustine that no longer serve their original purpose, such as Excelsior High School and Buttersfield Garage. Charlie and Queene also discuss specific elements of Queene’s childhood and how these differ from the experiences of modern young people. Queene describes the chores she performed in a house lacking electricity or indoor plumbing, the work her parents and siblings did outside of the house, and even simple activities like hanging laundry or using a shared-line telephone. Queene’s interview provides an in-depth look into daily life in West Augustine and describes how the community has grown, changed, and yet still remained true to its historic roots.
