School & Church

Connections with church and school, particularly with the Sisters of St. Joseph, marked important moments in their lives.

Mimi and Margo attended St. Joseph's Academy, a Catholic school. Their father, J. Edward "Red" Cox, was a coach there, and was the first Director of Parks and Recreation in the town. In the 1940s, he had been a star catcher for the St. Augustine Saints baseball team.

Easter seemed to hold the strongest and warmest memories. Margo and Mimi both shared stories of dressing up for church on Easter Sunday, riding in flower-decked carriages, and their father's tradition of giving their mother orchids to celebrate the occassion. The occassion called for posed family photos outside their Marine Street home.

Spring also meant the annual Blessing of the Fleet, a tradition that continues today.
