Leisure

As revealed in our oral histories, mid-century residents of West Augustine remember using their leisure time to listen to music, dance, and go to the beach. Because of segregation, the only beach allowing African Americans was Butler Beach, located on Anastasia Island. Some of the music venues remembered by residents are not found in local archives. Thus, their memories are essential for reconstructing the lives of this community.
