Places of mid-century West Augustine

To the residents in West Augustine, local businesses were a way of life between the 1940s and the 1960s. In 1916, the eastern route of the Dixie Highway on which St. Augustine sits, was completed connecting the Midwest (Sault Ste. Marie, MI) to the South (Miami, FL). A section of the paved highway went right through St. Augustine’s King and West King streets, creating a flow of tourist traffic for local businesses.

With the later creation of US1 and later I-95, traffic was diverted away from this route, leading to a decline in local businesses. Many of the places remembered in the West Augustine Oral History Collection are no longer in existence. These pages begin to tell their stories. If you have more information or photographs of the businesses mentioned here, please contact us (kenright@flagler.edu).
