Established in 1879 as the Florida Baptist Institute in Live Oak, Florida, this African-American college has had several names throughout its lifespan, including Florida Normal and Industrial College. The campus moved to Saint Augustine in 1918 shortly after shots were fired into the school's windows in Live Oak. In 1968, it left St. Augustine for Miami, again seeking refuge from racist attacks.

During its time in Saint Augustine, the school grew their own agriculture for the cafeteria. In the 1950s and 1960s, the students attending the college were active in the local the Civil Rights Movement. The only remnants of the college in Saint Augustine are the original arches of the front of the school.
